Important information

The ATO is currently auditing about 80% of new SMSFs. This audit process will significantly slow down the issuing of the TFN and the registering of the fund. If your fund is chosen for audit please comply with their requests.

SMSFs are the fastest-growing sector of the superannuation industry. There is now more money stored in SMSFs than in all of the Australian industry funds combined.

A self managed superannuation fund is a form of trust fund. As such, it must have a trust deed which sets out the rules under which the fund will operate. It is possible to have a single member fund. If you have a corporate trustee for a single member fund, the member needs to be one of the following:

  • the sole director of the trustee company
  • one of only two directors and either related to the other director, or not an employee of the other director.
  • You can also have two individuals as trustees. One trustee will need to be a member and the other needs to be either related to the
member or any other person that does not employ them.

For more information on SMSF's, see the video guides at the bottom of this page.

Introduction to Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSF)

A self-managed super fund (SMSF) is a private superannuation fund regulated by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and managed by its members, allowing them to make investment decisions on their behalf. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the advantages of an SMSF, the process of setting up a self-managed super fund, and how Perth Legal Docs' online services can help you establish your SMSF quickly and confidently.

The Benefits of a Self-Managed Superannuation Fund

A self-managed superannuation fund offers numerous benefits, including greater control, flexibility, and potential tax advantages. An SMSF allows its members to invest in various assets, including shares, property, and managed funds. Managed Super Fund vs. Self-Managed Super Fund

Understanding the difference between a managed super fund and a self-managed super fund is crucial in determining which option is right for you. A managed super fund is operated by a professional fund manager who makes investment decisions on behalf of the fund's members. In contrast, an SMSF allows its members to manage their investments directly. By setting up a super fund or a self-managed superannuation fund, you can exercise greater control over your retirement savings and customize your investment strategy to suit your preferences.
